Foundation Chain: Ch22

Making The SC Stitches:

Mark the first chain from hook.  Call this marked st as (B)st.
R1:  Sc on 3rd ch from hook.  Sc on each stitch or chain across.   [Turn work.  Reposition working yarn by moving it counter-clockwise and lay on top of hook].
Total stitch count (Tsc) =20.

R2:  (B)Ch1, mark this stitch.  Skip st between (B)st) and first sc of previous row; sc on next st and on each remaining scs (of previous row).  Sc on marked (B)st. Do instructions inside [  ] of R1.  Tsc20.

R3: (B)Ch1,  mark this stitch.  Skip  st between (B)ch1 and first sc of previous row; sc on next st and on each remaining scs of previous row.  Sc on marked (B)ch1 st of previous row.  Do instructions inside [  ] of R1.  Tsc20.  Do not count turning ch or st. !Turning chain is the (B)ch1/st that you make at the beginning of each row.

R4 to R10:  Repeat R3.

Making The Dc Stitches:

Dc = Double crochet

R11: (B)ch2.  Mark this stitch just made.  Skip st between (B)ch2 and first st of previous row; dc on next st and on each remaining sts of previous row.  Note:  (To avoid creating a gap after making the  last dc, Insert hook into (B)ch1 st, catching 2 loops of the chain).   Dc on marked (B)ch1 of previous row.  Do [ ] of R1.  Tc20.

R12 to R20:  Repeat R11.

Square Swatch, Granny Square Using DC Stitches:

!=beside a phrase or stitch is an explanation or comment and not command.

Foundation Chain (Ring):  Ch4,  sc on 4th st from hook to form a ring.

R1:  (B)Ch2, mark this stitch just made.  Count this Ch-2 as one dc.  2dc over ring.  !First 3-dc group of stitches made, need 3 more.  (Ch3, 3dc over ring) 3x.  Ch3, slst on (B)ch2 space.

R2:  (B)Ch2 mark this st just made.  !Count this ch-2 st as one dc st.  Dc next dc stitches.  2dc on next ch-3 space, ch3, 2dc on same ch-3 sp.  (Dc on next dcs, 2dcs on next ch-3 sp, ch3, 2dcs on same sp) 1x.  Dc on next st, 2dcs on next ch-3 sp, ch3, 2dcs on same sp.  Slst on (B)ch2.  Check Stich count and see that all sides of the square has the same number of Stitches; there should be 7 dcs on each side of the square. Stitch count between
Ch-3 Space = 7.Note:  Always Check the Stitch count between ch-3 loops ( or Ch-3 space corner loop) on all sides of the square, after working each side of the square to avoid finding errors and uraveling several rounds later.
R3: (B)Ch2 mark this st just made.  !Count this ch-2 st as one dc st.  Dc next dc stitch and on each each remaining dc before Ch-3 corner sp.  2dc on next ch-3 space, ch3, 2dc on same ch-3 sp.  (Dc on next dc and on each remaining dc before ch-3 corner sp; 2dcs on next ch-3 sp, ch3, 2dcs on same sp) 2x.  Dc on next st and on each remaining st , 2dcs on next ch-3 sp, ch3, 2dcs on same sp.  Dc on on each remaining dc.  Note:  The slst that ended the previous round created a stitch  which  begins the ch-2 (B)ch2 of the current round, see photo A.  Do not make a stitch on it. Slst on marked (B)ch2.  Check Stitch count and see that all sides of the square has the same number of Stitches; there should be 11 dcs between ch-3 corner loop (space) on each side of the square. Stitch count between Ch-3 Spaces = 11.

Note:  Total stitch count (tsc) between ch-3 corner spaces = 11. !There is an increase of 4 stitches between ch-3 Spaces for each additional row.

Next row should have 15 sts between Ch-3 corner spaces (11+ 4 = 15).

R4:  Repeat R3.  Tsc = 15
R5:  Repeat R3.  Tsc = (15+ 4 = 19)
R6:  Repeat R3.  Tsc = (19 + 4 = 23)
